A
Camp: A Camp Only
available as an import, this Cardigans side project is the only
bit of Nina we get 'til the new album from the Scandinavian freaks
shows up on American soil. This is a great collection of a little
more rocked out, and slightly more playful noises - not so
dissimilar from her main band - but a nice space for some
exploration... |
His
Name is Alive: Someday My Blues Will Cover the Earth In
all honesty, I picked this up because of the CD cover (which 4AD
excels at producing high design) only to find one of the year's
best discs - a grand departure from a former near-gothic band goes
stunning and jazz-beat sexy. |
Motherland:
Natalie Merchant
I
didn't want to like her as much as I do. Over the past year and a
half, I have grabbed her prior two discs as well - her solo work
standing far and above the 10,000 Maniacs (which was a quality
band in its own right). Staying true to both the folk and proudly
feminine messages - she continues a path to greatness. |
Leona
Naess: I Tried to Rock You But You Only Roll Strange
second album (did you know there was a first?) produces incredible
affects - frolicking pop hooks and a certain dirty plushness that
gives her alto-flavored soul something of a rockabilly background.
There is a sexy thing going on. |
Under
Rug Swept: Alanis Morrissette The
long awaited third album (not counting the acoustic MTV disc)
moves Alanis forward on the producing front and proves that she
wasn't a one-time thing. All the 'angry girl' crap she gets is
undeserved in that she has just as much affection in these songs
-- and tell me what male rocker gets as much guff for being
pissed. I say, keep it up, Alanis! |
